About the MDS
The Marathon Des sables will be in its 22nd year in 2007, normally between
600 to 700 entrants take part in what is renowned as the “Toughest
footrace on earth”.
It involves a 6 day event covering a total distance of around 150 miles,
run across the Sahara dessert in Morocco, this is the equivalent of consecutively
running 5 ½ marathons.
Each stage has a set time to complete the distance, the 4th stage will
involve a distance of around 52miles.
Daily temperatures reach around 120°F and competitors have to contend
with running on uneven rocky ground, as well as 15 – 20% of the
distance being in sand dunes.
If all this was not enough, competitors must also carry everything they
will need for the duration in a rucksack including food, clothes, medical
kit and sleeping bag. (water and tents supplied!)

Why we are running
Apart from being totally insane, we will be raising funds for the Fire
Services National Benevolent Fund and a local South Wales charity called
TOGS.
The FSNBF provides a range of services that preserve the quality of life
for serving / retired firefighters and their families. 'The Fund' offers
services such as therapy and rehabilitation facilities, recuperative care
and sheltered housing, in addition to recently introducing much-needed
child and family therapy programmes. TOGS is a centre based in South Wales
that assists children with Physical, learning and sensory disabilities
along with providing the necessary support to their families
